However , the cold weather meant Ian ’ s contract gritting business with equipment supplied by Vale Engineering , was kept busy keeping the supermarkets and car parks operational in some appalling circumstances .
To remind you , Crossfield Farm is part of , but on the edge of , the large Crathorne Estate where Ian ’ s family have farmed for more than 100 years . The Tate family have always had a strong relationship with the Dugdales and James Dugdale , 2nd Baron of Crathorne , continues to be most supportive and helpful to Ian and his family . Despite all the weather challenges the Crossfield Farm herd has continued to flourish , now sporting a 200 head herd primarily made up of Charolais and Blonde cross ’ s as well as a healthy selection of Limousins . Stores still go back to Northallerton at 20 – 24 months and Finishers go to Dawn Meats at 20 – 25 months . Ian still has a very good name at Northallerton Auction Mart for the weight and quality he achieves for his stores . When I asked him what he enjoyed the most , he told me how much pride he took in his animals and showing them at Northallerton , which is testament to the skill and drive he has .
Acreage wise the Crossfield now stands at 90 acres Ian has just taken on another 120 acres to add to the stock . So , he now farms around 1100 acres . His contracting Business has continued to flourish acquiring several new customers this year . Ian has just invested in two Massey tractors a new 305 and a second hand 265 both from Carrs at Thirsk who as ever provide an excellent service and backup . These
valuable workhorses are invaluable both around the Farm and in the Contracting side .
Behind every strong business is a good woman . Ian ’ s wife Lynn as well as working a full 3-day week still finds time to run and manage the finances for the farm which is no mean feat .
