COUNTDOWN ON FOR THIS YEAR ’ S GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW
THE 164th Great Yorkshire Show is just weeks away when there will be the very best competitions , animals , machinery , food and drink to celebrate farming and countryside .
The best of British livestock will be on display when Beef Shorthorn , Charolais and Longhorn Cattle Societies all host their national competitions . There ’ s been waiting lists for the sheep classes , and there ’ ll be new sheep breeds with Badger Face Texel and Castlemilk Moorit appearing for the first time . Pigs , goats and pigeons will also be looking their best for their classes .
New in the equine rings will be classes for Traditional Cobs and Connemara ponies and the Main Ring will once again host the main showjumping spectacle of the Show , the prestigious Cock O ’ The North competition , on Thursday . Main Ring performer for this year ’ s show will be Lorenzo , the incredible horseman while Sporting Soprano Lizzie Jones will be singing twice a day once again .
A new look fashion show “ Sheep to Chic ” will be held on the sheep shearing stage next to Brown Gate every day at 12:30 which will tell the story of how wool gets from sheep to the clothes we wear .
The fantastic Great Yorkshire Show Pole Climbing Championships will see climbers race to the top after two new 100ft Douglas Fir poles were kindly supplied by Dawnay Estates at Wykeham near Scarborough .
Sheepdogs are back with a new display area created near to Gold Gate while the Military Village has been moved up to White Gate .
The Vertu Motors GYS Stage will once again be held in the former fashion show
building near Grey Gate . TV host Matt Baker MBE , Peter Wright of The Yorkshire Vet and Countryfile presenter Adam Henson are all appearing in chat shows hosted by TV presenter Christine Talbot .
The fiercely competitive Cheese and Dairy Show will once again include a charity auction , this year raising funds for Herriot Hospice . Last year ’ s raised over £ 5,500 for The Samaritans . If honey is more to your taste , the Hives and Honey
section offers a great insight into the importance of bees to the ecosystem as well as some delicious examples of produce .
Whilst tradition is important to the Show , there ’ s also an eye on the future – don ’ t miss the new Innovation marquee , showcasing some of the latest farming methods and machinery .
There ’ s also cookery theatres , our Garden Show , Art Show , farriers and a fab 12ft tall sculpture made of over 600 horse shoes from across Yorkshire , created by local sculptor Ollie Holman ! It ’ s a show not to be missed .
