‘ We have sold over 30 bulls from Garrowby alone in the past year. I think people have been happier, due to Covid, coming to one farm rather than being somewhere where there are lots of people. It has been a fair uptake and we’ ve averaged around £ 5000 per bull without any absolute high flyers. We’ ve also sold heifers at decent prices too.’
‘ We’ ve now changed our commercial herd policy. We now see it as being there to show what our own home-produced bulls can do in a commercial herd, like a shop window. Before we were selling strong stores at a year old. We now sell them off the cow in the autumn, selling at around 8-9 months.’
‘ Our top calves will go as show calves, where we earn a premium and we sell those at the Spring Spectacular at Leyburn. The young male cattle are left entire and sold as young bulls for people to take and fatten them. We sell the heifers as breeding heifers. We tend to go for selling commercials for breeding because of our high health status, being BvD accredited on both commercial and pedigrees.’
‘ We’ re getting customers wanting commercial bulls. They want the Blue X Limousin bull rather than pure Limousin, so that’ s an extra market for us.’
The whole emphasis has now moved towards selling to other breeders. Clive tells of this being about 90 per cent of the cattle they sell today.
‘ Our aim is to provide for the commercial breeder. We would hope the very top end pedigree bulls would go to a pedigree breeder for a premium but the majority of our market lies with the commercial man who wants quality bulls to breed quality stock.’
Clive has tightened up the calving to two 10-week periods of March to May in Spring and September to November in Autumn.
‘ That gives us a supply of young bulls for the autumn and spring breed sales. I can see us moving a little more towards autumn calving as the February and May sales are more when bulls are in demand.’
