£170 per tonne last year, starting at £150
and with a bottom price of £147 and top
price achieved of £190. It’s all about the
average price overall. My dad used to say
‘tops and lows are made for fools’. We
generally sell the oilseed rape straight off
the combine.’
Like many other farmers in the East
Riding the closure of the Vivergo plant
last year looked as though it was going to
be quite a blow, but it didn’t turn out that
way. Chris has his own theory about why
it closed.
‘Ninety-nine per cent of our wheat was
going to Vivergo via John Burnhill at Fron-
tier and we wondered where else it would
go but it hasn’t been a problem finding
other buyers. The government probably
hadn’t budgeted to have to buy wheat at
£170-£190 when the plant was built. At that
time wheat was around £80-£90.’
Manor House was this year’s host to the
East Riding Federation of Young Farm-
ers Clubs’ Annual Rally which brought
back happy memories for Chris who was
chairman of Brandesburton YFC and also
county chairman when it was renamed to
Humberside Federation until East Riding
people rightly claimed it back.
‘I was county chairman in 1975 when
Margaret Mitchell was county organiser
and Chris Herd of Garton on the Wolds was
vice chairman. I had joined Brandesbur-
ton YFC in the 60s and was club chairman
1969-70 after I’d finished at Bishop Burton
College. In those days social lives were
dominated by young farmers club activ-
ities and we had packed club nights. We
were a strong club and I think we won the
Lady Katherine Phillips Trophy for most
points at the rally 10 years consecutively.
Driffield, Beverley and Bainton were also
very strong and at that time Hornsea also
had a club that met at Seaton.’
‘I took part in stockjudging, represent-
ing county three or four times, and public
speaking which I started off disliking but
looking back I’m so pleased I was pushed
into it as it helps in later life.’
Chris is a past chairman of Driffield Agri-
cultural Society and has been a trustee for
a number of years. He is also a member of

sters that is made up of a dozen farmers

the year with a European or UK visit also

Point to Point man.
Chris and his wife Anna are partners in
the farm and have two sons Rob and Tom
and a daughter Julia who all earn their
living away from Brandesburton.
‘The lads have an interest in the farm
which is good because I’m giving it another
couple of years and then that’s it for me.
Tom has run a pop up café here a couple of
times now called The Grazing Barn. We’ve
discussed the possibility of a farm shop.
It may be that Manor House is contract
farmed in future, but hopefully it will
remain in the Richardson family for future
generations. We’re talking about the future
at the moment as I have seen too many
families leave discussions until too late.’
