BLEAK BANK FARM 43 • JUN/JUL 2019 about hard work today. Back then they worked with horses and there was far more manual labour and their dad, my granddad was a good horseman. The milk would be taken by churn on a wagon to Clapham railway station where it went to Rowntrees in York. If they had enough milk already it would be sent back on the train the next day for them to throw away. Today we just have a tanker come to pick it up, take it to Arla and that’s the last we see of it.’ John believes renewable energy and tourism are the possible growth areas for the farm and others in the area. ‘We recycle water quite a lot already, we have LED lights and we are looking into heat retention for the dairy to provide warm water. Costs of capital investment are quite high, but we will consider anything to continue farming here into the next generations. It’s fabulous William wants to work here and Judith and I will do everything we can to help him.’ SETTLE COUNTRY STORE Your local supplier offering great service Farm Supplies ∙ Animal Feed ∙ Equestrian ∙ Animal Health ∙ Country Clothing Bentham Aucon Mart, High Bentham, Nr Lancaster, LA2 7HF Pleased to be the Dawson Family’s Market of Choice for Masham & Dalesbred Sheep Proud suppliers to John Dawson wishing him continued success Friday 13th September Annual Show & Sale of 2000 Masham Gimmer Lambs OPEN Mon – Fri 8.30am - 5pm | Sat 9am - 12pm Call David Elms on 01729 815070 / 07538 289866 Tel:- 015242 61444/61246 (Sale days) www.benthamaucon.co.uk RUR AL & AGRICULTURAL | COMMERCIAL | PROPERT Y & CONVEYANCING | ESTATE PLANNING | FAMILY & Local Knowledge Practical Advice Barnard Castle Sedbergh Hawes Leyburn t. 01833 600 160 DL12 8EQ t. 015396 223 40 LA10 5AB t. 01969 666 290 DL8 3QS t. 01969 621 230 DL8 5EH mbmcgarry.co.uk e.
