Farm Safety: highlight it, prioritise it, address it
there is a huge amount of work
to be done within the sector to
achieve the campaign’s ambitious
reduction in injuries and fatalities
by summer 2023, of 50%.
So, how can you make your
farm safer and more compliant?
Alongside reviewing your
insurances, McClarrons can assist
with a risk management strategy.
By establishing, documenting and
reviewing your procedures, we
can help you make and maintain
sensible arrangements to min-
imise the hazardous situations
on your farm, or prevent them
altogether.
We can assist with auditing
to identify whether you are
exposed to the top causes of
accidents and whether you have
effective controls in place to
prevent them.
The HSE campaign is designed
to ensure that those who are
responsible not only for their
employees’ health and safety,
but their own, are complying with
WITH Farm Safety initiatives being
raised by the Farm Safety Partner-
ship and Health & Safety Executive
this year, McClarrons discuss their
importance and how you can look
to make your farm safer.
The Health & Safety Executive
are carrying out a programme of
targeted inspections on farms this
summer; alongside this, the Farm
Safety Partnership launched the
#DriveSafetyForward campaign
at the beginning of the year,
which is focussing on different
aspects of farm safety throughout
the year. Winter looked at farm
machinery, spring focused on
cattle, whilst summer is focussing
on children and autumn will look
at working at height.
The agricultural sector has the
poorest health and safety record
of any industry in Britain; whilst
the sector accounts for a huge
20% of work-related deaths each
year, it only makes up 1.2% of the
British workforce. It is clear that
the law to reduce the number
of injuries and fatalities in the
industry.
With the campaign’s summer
focus being on children, we urge
farmers to take note and ensure
their farm meets the HSE’s stand-
ards, not only in preparation for
the inspections but to ensure
the safety of themselves and
those on and around their farm.
The HSE has provided guidance
around “What a good farm looks
like”, which is available on their
website.
McClarrons can also assist with
covering you for HSE inspection
fees through our specialist Man-
