Currently they have both A and B quota pricing for their milk with A price being linked to the Longley product and B price being linked to the World spot milk price. Discussions around milk price are had at least annually with Jim Dickinson (owner of Longley Farm) and monthly with Rachel Liles, their liaison officer with whom the relationship remains very strong. The Thurlstone Jersey herd consists of 300 head in the milking herd with 150 Jersey followers aged from birth to two year old. Cows are block calved in Autumn and Spring and they run a paddock grazing system between March and November with low yielders out all year round grazing on kale over the winter months. The herd is fed a TMR diet of grass/maize silage, lucerne, fodder beet, crimped maize/wheat, soya, oil seed rape, trafford syrup and minerals. www.farmers-mart.co.uk Jun/Jul 2016 65
