We’ve five Shorthorns and eight black Galloway cows at the moment. Sylvia is very keen on the cattle. We just didn’t want to have all our eggs in one basket and that’s what it has seemed with the sheep.” Sylvia comes from York originally but moved to Saltburn by the Sea when she was 10 years old. Her speciality is horses. “I rode before I could walk!” she says. “My mother used to take me riding when I was just four years old. I met Will when out hunting with the Staintondale Hunt. I used to have a little riding school. Today I breed sports horses, particularly for dressage. I have two dressage horses at the moment that have both had foals this time. The dressage route happened by accident. Someone dropped out of a competition and I had a horse called Pythagoras that I was asked to enter and we won!” Will’s NFU involvement is not something he has pursued out of political ambition. He simply wants to help his fellow farmers and growers. “It’s particularly tough at the moment if you’re milking cows twice a day and unable to sell at a sensible price. There are a lot of exterior pressures but in the long term, I hope that what we’re going through presently with deflated prices will be a blip. As farmers we’re producing food for an expanding population.” Will and Sylvia have a daughter Marion (17). One of Will’s two elder brothers, Bob tragically lost his life four years ago as a result of a brain tumour. He was a research scientist. His remaining brother, Justin is a specialist weaver and dress designer based in Cumbria.
