“When we put our business
plan together for our landlords,
Albanwise, we looked at what
we could do that would fit
in here. Jen and I both love
caravanning and camping. We
have our own camper van.
We decided to put together
costings and sound out the
local authorities about starting
a caravan and camping site.
When we spoke to the local
tourist office they were very
supportive and said that they
fielded a number of enquiries
every year from visitors with
tents coming over on the ferry
to Hull who were looking for
appropriate sites and yet there
was no site near Beverley.
We were successful in getting
planning permission and finally
had everything in place to
open up just before Easter this
year thanks to some great help
from friends and family. We
have 30 pitches including 12
with hard standing and 6 with
electrics. There are 14 grass
pitches for tents. We’ve put
in a new utility road, shower
block heated by a renewable
biomass pellet boiler, toilet
blocks, recycling point,
chemical disposal and a dog
wash which is proving very
popular.
‘It’s proving even more
popular than we thought
already. It’s great for walks
into the lovely countryside
around here or if you’re going
to Beverley Races and it’s a
leisurely half hour stroll into
town for a drink or two. We put
up a ‘pub of the week’ to try
on our board each week. We
already have bookings right
through to autumn. The TransPennine Way comes through
here as do others such as the
Beaver Trail.”
Oliver and Jen are working
with Historic England too as
the campsite was a gun site in
WWII with six of them aimed at
German bombers making their
way down the river Humber.
“We have four remaining anti
aircraft bunkers here. Our aim
is to clear and renovate them
too.”
Jen was born in Wigtoft
near Boston, Lincolnshire.
The couple both attended
Worksop College. Jen
studied Business at Trent
University.
Oliver’s two brothers are
Phillip and Christian. Phillip
is project manager at Food
group, Greencore; Christian
is area manager for poultry
company, Fraccenda Group.
Both attended Harper Adams
University College studying
Agriculture.
