ABN depot four miles away in
Sherburn in Elmet and also use
for feeding our cattle. This year
we’ve reduced our oilseed rape
acreage to 60 acres. We have
40+ acres of conservation land
under the HLS scheme and 60
acres of temporary grass this
year as we were approached
to help out with providing
additional car parking for the
Air Fest at Leeds East Airport
in Church Fenton. Our rotation
is normally two wheats, barley
and oilseed rape.”
The beef operation sees the
Claytons buy 100 Charolais and
Limousin X bullocks from Castle
Douglas and Newton Stewart in
October each year.
“We buy 10-12 month old
crosses, rear them and sell
nearly everything to ABP in
York at 22 months. They’re
usually all around 400 kilos
deadweight. We sell a few at
Selby Livestock Auction Mart.
They have an added benefit
to the farm in that they graze
the grasses and also produce
good quality muck to keep
up the soil fertility. We would
stock more but the land we
use for grazing is 100 acres of
the land we rent and it is quite
prone to flooding so we can’t
stock it quite as highly as we
would like. Dad has a lot more
patience with the cattle and
will spend a lot of time with
them.”
Farm machinery at Intake
Farm includes models from
a number of local companies
including Russells, Ripon
Farm Services and Peacock &
Binnington.
“We have a large John Deere
6210 210hp tractor, a large
200hp New Holland tractor and
New Holland 7040 22ft header
straw walker combine harvester
which has had two seasons so
far.”
The farm picked up a Highly
Commended in the Yorkshire
Agricultural Society’s Tye
Trophy awards a few years
ago.
“Conservation is something
that’s dear to my heart and very
important in the countryside.
This year we have two nesting
pairs of barn owls and we
always have deer on the
farm.”
