After leaving school at 16 he started work at Penistone Mart and was auctioneering by the time he was 18. “I took over the business in 1983 when I was 29, after dad passed away. At that time 90 per cent of our business was through livestock markets and farmers, it’s now gone completely the other way and residential property sales make up the 90 per cent but I’m still wholly committed to agriculture. I auctioneered in Huddersfield and Penistone livestock markets for many years until Huddersfield closed in 1996 and Penistone finished in 2004.
