Ripon Farm Services are proud suppliers to
Phil Meadley and family of Grange Farm

Getting
closer to
being precise
Chris Berry talks with Phil
Meadley at his HGCA monitor
farm in North Frodingham.
»»Precision farming
methods and the kit that is
necessary has undoubtedly
become increasingly popular
for many arable farmers; but
there are still those who are as
yet undecided over whether
they should invest. It’s a
conundrum - particularly for
those who are generally of the
size of farm that has to balance
the cost of the equipment
against the improved returns
possible through taking on the
new systems and equipment.
Phil Meadley and his brother,
Adrian work together on their
family’s Grange Farm at North
Frodingham in the East Riding
of Yorkshire. Last year their
farm became an HGCA Monitor
Farm for a three year term,
as Phil wanted to assess the
various merits of taking on new
precision farming systems and
gather information from others
before making any decisions.
He said: “We have just over
600 acres and grow arable
combinable crops of wheat,
barley, oilseed rape, vining
peas and beans. We grow
150 acres each of both first
and second wheats. This year
we are growing 30 acres of
Belepi for the first time. It’s a
flexi-wheat that can be sown
in either autumn or spring.
The other wheat varieties are
Revelation, Relay, JB Diego and
Zulu. Revelation did really well
last year.
“Our first wheats normally
achieve more than four tonnes
per acre and the second
wheats are as near to that
