if a ewe has died, that they
then bottle feed for a day or
two, and once they reach the
right weight as fat lambs of 40
kilos they sell them at York or
Thirsk,” she said.
“When they sold them
that first year, Oliver quickly
calculated that the prices the
received would mean they
could have 27 the following
year! He wanted 30 this year,
but somehow we ended up
with 38! Their teachers have
been very keen on what they
are doing and they keep a
graph that records weight
gain each week. They also go
into the ring to sell their own
stock.”
The move into holiday
accommodation came about
after the dairy cows had been
sold in July 2005 and their
first bed and breakfast visitors
arrived in September 2006.
“The farmhouse had six

updating,” Helen explained.
“There was no central

staircases and that means
our guests can come and go
as they please without any
encroachment from me. Last

year was a record time for us.
We do really well with visitors
to York, either holidaymakers
or businessvisitors. Everyone
enjoys the tranquillity here: in
fact one of the guests said
jokingly to me at breakfast one
day that they couldn’t stand
the (lack of)noise. He said “It’s
so quiet here, it’s just bliss!”
