ROB ROYD FARM SHOP Rob Royd Farm Shop & Restaurant a Yorkshire success story with a difference Since 2005, Rob White and his team have been building an extraordinary farm business close to the M1 near Barnsley. IAN WILKINSON went along to find out more – and try out the Pork Scratching bread! In 2005, Trevor White and his son Rob were farming 160 acres and their primary business was in egg production. But changes in the laws for poultry farming meant the time had come to diversify if the future was to be a prosperous one. Also, Trevor was getting to a point in life where he needed to consider slowing down - although even now at 80, he maintains a full working day. Although in a rural area, the family farm is just two miles from the town centre of Barnsley and close to the everbusy M1. Both these location advantages were significant in bringing Rob’s vision - to create a super Farm Shop and restaurant with a difference – to reality. ‘Rob’s vision and research paid off’ He did a lot of research beforehand of course, taking key inspiration from the successful Blacker Hall Farm shop at nearby Wakefield. Rob’s vision and research paid off and he and his team have now built a thriving operation that is expanding and gaining in popularity all the time. In 2007, after two years of obtaining the relevant planning permissions, Rob Royd Farm Shop was built from scratch with its own butchery, bakery and restaurant.
