“ The city of Hull is safe from flooding now . They ’ ve spent a fortune on making sure of that , but it is in the farmers ’ area that the banks of the River Hull have not been maintained to an adequate capacity particularly in the upper reaches above Top Lock .
“ When I was chairman I took on the responsibility of making certain the board took on what the Environment Agency ( EA ) and Defra weren ’ t going to do after the 1995 act when MAFF was done away with and they were created .
“ Ever since then the authorities have been doing less and less physical work and we have been doing it . We now spend more money on EA work than we do on the board ’ s work , but if we didn ’ t do that work we would not be able to get rid of our water because 90 per cent of it goes out through the EA ’ s dykes .
“ One of my main concerns and my driving force over drainage is for my fellow NFU members , board paying members , levy paying members , because they are getting flooded by what the EA is not doing .
John is similarly vitriolic over former Defra boss Rt Hon George Eustice over his part in trade agreements .
“ He was in charge of the trade agreements for agriculture and would say , with a degree of pride it seemed , that we were just a little bit below 80 per cent of self-sufficiency in what we grow in this country .
“ He then said it is a little bit lower than that now . It is 53 per cent for crying out loud ! And the figure is getting worse . This is what we are up against with these
