“ We buy everything in as stores . Our cattle are mostly Limousin X . We have about 400 beef cattle at any one time , buying them at about 15 months and taking them to 25-30 months old . We have some Belted Galloways that we outwinter on 60 acres of rented land at Brighouse . As they are a native breed and better more mature we take them to over 30 months .
“ We buy lambs at Holmfirth every week ; and pigs and cattle in Selby . Our fat cattle go to Spenborough abattoir , which cuts down on food miles .
“ Store cattle are bought in autumn , over-wintered and start becoming fat from August onwards the following year . The ones that don ’ t get fat enough on the grass we finish off inside from October .
“ We usually start selling our own reared beef from August onwards and if we run out of stock , which can happen in May , we then buy in the market .
“ Everything we buy as stock at the markets goes through the farm shop and we don ’ t deliver . All of our buyers , whether individuals , restaurants and pubs come and collect .
“ We use all our own wheat and barley for the cattle . Peter Rhodes Feed Services of Storwood come and mix it on the farm . We grow 80 acres of wheat and barley and 14 acres of fodder beet .
Richard is still involved with all aspects of the farming and business enterprise as he has always been .
“ I head up the whole operation of the farm , farm shop and our property company . My sons George and Charles came straight into the business after their studies . George is the eldest and runs the shop and Charles is also in shop , and then manages the farm , usually from the afternoon onwards . It ’ s Charles who does most of the farming . Sarah , George ’ s wife works in the shop ; Marieke Charles ’ wife runs the property company .
“ I lost my wife Catherine four years ago when she died suddenly at just 66 years of age . I have eight grandchildren .
Richard is a member of the CLA and has a shoot on his land for wild pheasants .
