“ There ’ s a good selection to pick through for the show team and for some nice butcher ’ s lambs . As a whole I think we are more of a ewe producing flock as Hampshires are quite feminine in their face . We breed some really smart , stylish ewe lambs , but then we won at Harrogate last year with a ram shearling , so what do I know ?
Showing has been very much a part of Stephen ’ s life from an early age .
“ When I was a kid we had Pekin hens and I used to show them . I moved on to showing sheep and started showing the Hampshires in 2010 . When I was about 14 , a couple of years after having started with them at home , I took the plunge and gave it a go with my grandparents and my mum . Everything that has happened since has developed from there .
“ We are usually just putting the Hampshire tup in for next year ’ s crop of show lambs as the Great Yorkshire Show ends .
Stephen says the cattle play an important part on the farm as they always have .
“ We have a mix of suckler cows and bucket-reared calves . The cows are Charolais X and Angus X and there are 54 to calve in spring . Everything runs with a Charolais bull which we buy from the Hayhurst ’ s Whitecliffe Herd of Kirby Misperton . We will bucket rear 20 calves at a time .
