“ Nick Baker of Bainton Heights was involved too . We used to rear him suckler replacements for his herd up at Lockton . When he started bringing in Stabilisers because of their maternal traits I was initially sceptical but having seen them a number of years I realised what the genetics were about and they then made perfect sense to me .
“ We are now on to our 25th Stabiliser bull and run 8 bulls at any one time . We ’ ve used Stabiliser bulls as our terminal sire for a number of years . We do have the odd Hereford X and Aberdeen Angus but our cows are now nearly all Stabilisers . Our target is to get to 300 cows because we think that consumes one person ’ s labour on the farm .
“ I ’ m still not inclined to the pedigree side even though we are moving towards it , without registration .
“ We like them because they work well off grazing what are primarily poor grasses . Half our farmed area is grass and they graze it for 6 months of the year and then have 6 months on the farmstead in the farm buildings .
Paul says the Stabiliser cows ’ temperament , mothering ability and efficiency in producing good quality beef calves are everything he is looking for .
“ They are quiet , which is what we are after . We just need to do what we do as efficiently and simply as we possibly can . We were looking to take the labour out of our suckler cows and that ’ s what they do . We want easily manageable cattle that consistently produce good calves that are nearly all destined for the meat industry .
“ The data behind the bulls and the dams is a big plus for us as it allows monitoring of performance that has gone behind them .
“ We start calving from February 1 each year and aim to be through the body of it before the end of April because that means we can do all the tagging , vaccinating and whatever else is needed , which isn ’ t usually a lot , on site .
“ We keep the first seven weeks ’ male calves entire and they are weaned at 7-8 months and sold off as bull stores . We usually have around 80-head of store bulls and we have a buyer who comes and buys the lot . It ’ s a fairly unique opportunity for someone to buy an entire
