A Breed from the past .... a breed for the future
THE Society has the purpose of preserving and promoting Whitefaced Woodland sheep as a distinctive and economically viable breed . Originating from the Woodland valley , which links Derwent and Ladybower to the Snake Pass and Glossop , to many locals they were known as the Penistone .
The Whitefaced Woodland is one of the largest of the hill breeds , hardy and long-lived , adapting well to all conditions and systems of management . The ewes are very milky , with exceptional mothering instincts , and produce strong and lively lambs . The large , well-proportioned frame produces a lean carcase , readily meeting the demands of today ’ s health-conscious consumer .
There is a wide choice of production to suit every situation : pure breed for replacements , store lambs or prime carcases , or put ewes to a terminal sire to produce outstanding lambs , which finish quickly and cheaply , selling directly off the ewe . A hardwearing , robust , thrifty sheep , equally at home in its harsh native environment or on richer pastures , its high performance potential and low depreciation make it a very profitable breed .
If you want to see some of these fantastic sheep for yourself , the Champion of Champions is selected at the Hope Show ( August Bank Holiday Monday ) from the best of all sheep at the shows throughout the year . This photograph is from the Hope Show in 2018 .
