4 EDITOR’S INTRO
FEB/MAR 2020 • farmers-mart.co.uk
As soon as we hit the New
Year it’s the start of the long
agricultural show season
and machinery is at the
forefront for many farmers.
THIS year’s LAMMA Show was
branded ‘a commercial and profes-
sional success’ and bookings are
already filling fast for 2021. Watch out
for the latest developments as to who
is attending. YAMS was another great
success up at York and as a bonus
we were blessed by good weather
as well. Find reviews of both LAMMA
(p36) and YAMS (p28) inside this issue.
We also have coverage of Ripon Farm
Services’ two-day open event, page
48, which was attended by more
people than ever.
2020 is a year of celebration for
Farmstar as they mark their 30th year
in business. Our feature on page 38
covers this 30-year success story,
as well as another successful annual
open day event made even better
by the arrival of the Yorkshire Air
Ambulance. Farmstar are sponsoring
the Yorkshire Air Ambulance this year
and will be hosting a big fundraising
event in November.
Looking ahead to our April/May
issue, there will be another mile-
stone machinery feature, the mighty
Rickerby Group are celebrating 140
years in business at their 2-day open
event in March. Watch out for the
report and feature.
Its been a tough start for many
farmers this year and we hope you
manage to battle through the chal-
lenges that will be ahead for some.
Chris Berry went to see John Jackson
who is part of the new Dynamic man-
agement team at Robert D Webster’s,
they are really moving this long-es-
tablished well known East Yorkshire
Business forward.
Look out for our feature on
Headingley Farmer’s Market on page
12 – this is a fantastic example of how
a farmer’s market has helped with com-
munity regeneration and how most of
the stalls are all manned and supplied
by Yorkshire farmers. I interviewed
several stall holders with really inter-
esting stories and fantastic business’s in
their own right. There will be more from
Headingley in the April/May issue.
' how you can get
started in the farm
shop game '
Chris Berry has been to see several
interesting farms. He talks with Billy &
Sarah Turner and Michael Dumbreck
champion Charolais breeders. Billy has
been at the forefront of the breed for
nearly 50 years. Richard & Lucy Lunn
of Home Farm have shown how you
can get started in the farm shop game
without huge investment but with a
fabulous catchy name. Horny Cow.
Chris Berry talks with Chris & Lisa
Timm following their shift from
Appleton Roebuck to West Blansby
Farm. Chris has established a name
for himself in sheep breeds such as
Suffolks, Charollais and Beltex, while
also steadily building his herd of
Aberdeen Angus cattle he is also now
close to launching a new hybrid breed,
the Yorkie.
Hope you enjoy our packed issue and
see you all in May by which time we are
hopefully enjoying sunshine all round.
