as we sold them in October and in Febru-
ary 2001 was the foot and mouth outbreak.
I had friends ring in good humour given
what it did to farmers to say why didn’t I
tell them, since I’d seemingly sold just at
the right time as it turned out!’
The move towards a pedigree herd
of Simmental cattle started when Nick
returned home to farm with Keith after
a career that had started with studies at
Bishop Burton College followed by work on
farms with Saviles at Kilham, Derek Beal at
Yedingham, pea vining for the Green Pea
Company and 14 years at Malton Bacon
Factory.
‘With my redundancy money from
Malton Bacon Factory we bought some
calves reared on the bucket,’ says Nick. ‘It’s
all grown from there. ‘Twenty young calves
came from Beeston livestock market and
the following year another 15. They formed
the foundation of the herd and we now
have 44 breeding cows with 10 heifers due
to join them in the next two years.’
‘We started selling young bulls and heifers
at eight months old at Malton livestock
market five years ago, anything over that
we sell with calves at foot. We calve from
February to April.’

‘When we started, we had a bit of
everything from Angus, Hereford, Black
Limousins and Grey Simmentals but we are
switching over to all pedigree Simmentals.
We started with a Simmental bull. We visited
a good friend of ours Steve Stubbings who
is also close by on the pretence that we
were to visit three farms that afternoon but
by 6pm we came home having bought our
first bull from Steve called Sledmere Barney
and every cow calved as easy as anything.
As he was a pedigree bull, we thought we
Proud to be associated with Phil and
Nick and wish them every success.
