FARMING TIMBERS
– CHOOSE WISELY
AROUND 85 years ago the TANALITH
brand of wood preservatives was first
introduced to provide an assured and re-
liable long-term protection against decay
and insect attack extending the service life
of timbers used around the farm.

’
Today TANALITH is still a tried, tested and
trusted protection for our modern timbers
used by sawmills and timber companies
nationwide. The TANALISED timbers they
produce are designed to meet the pro-
tection requirements of their end use.
Many timbers around the farm are used
in permanent ground contact – the most
severe environment for potential attack
from decay and insects – and need to very
best and assured protection.
Andy Hodge, marketing director of Lonza
Wood Protection, suppliers of TANALITH
preservative explains, “The latest TANALITH
wood preservatives from Lonza have all
the right ingredients and proven perfor-
mance to help keep our customers ahead
of the regulatory game and give them real
confidence for their different treated timber
markets.
“TANALITH now contains our innovative

tion technologies that really do boost the

penetration of the preservative into the
timbers as well as providing an enhanced
protection against certain copper tolerant
brown rots that can attack ground contact
timbers.
“Many of our TANALITH customers
have also invested in the latest surface
incising technologies for the agricultural
fencing timbers they offer as another way
of ensuring a premium long-term protec-
tion and performance from their treated
timbers.
“Not all preservative treated timbers are
the same in terms of the performance you
can expect. My advice to anyone looking
for preservative treated timbers around
the farm would be to find a supplier you
can trust by asking key questions. What
timber species are they using? Are they
drying the timbers correctly prior to treat-
ment? Are they using a premium wood
preservative that will do the job? Are they
achieving the treatment requirements to
meet a long term, ground contact perfor-
mance?
“Ask your supplier to demonstrate the
treatment practices they use and show
you the results within the treated timbers
themselves. A section through a treated
agricultural stake will highlight the preserv-
ative penetration they are achieving.”
Some suppliers of preservative treated
timbers offer performance assurances
against rot. These may well be worth the
small extra investment to achieve a longer
term investment return.
