We hold an open day nearly every two years raising funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Other sheep breeders have affectionately nicknamed us Team Fort as we always turn up as the whole family at the society shows and sales.’ ‘The Lleyn is a prolific breeding sheep and if you put any terminal sire on to the Lleyn you will always get a better carcase than you would out of a Mule,’ says Graham. ‘They also eat only around three-quarters of the food that the Mule e ats.’ ‘Our ewes are kept outside until about 8-10 weeks before lambing when we give the land a bit of a rest. They would lamb outside, but it suits us with them indoors. We feed really good quality silage we make ourselves.’ Mandy and Graham came to Brighton- house Farm in 1981 having saved up to buy it through running a milk round in Keighley. They’re both from Silsden originally and met at Silsden YFC. When they first arrived, the farm ran to just 5 acres. Today it runs 69951 - H&MLtd - 8TH.pdf 1 17/01/2018 14:46:18 to 450 acres with 100 acres in Lothersdale, 50 at Carleton and 50 at Otley. It’s all down to grass on hillside that goes from 900ft to 1260ft. Terry reseeds 20-30 acres each year. They aim for three cuts, the first in early June followed by the second around 4-5 weeks later and the third late on in the season. They operate all their own machinery. Graham has been chairman of the North East Lleyn Club for the past 10 years and the Forts have won the flock of the year title many times. ‘The future for the Lleyn breed is more farmers realising how profitable and com- petitive it is and that’s happening right now. We travel all over the country for sales, shows and to see great stock whether it is Ross-on-Wye, Ruthin, Welshpool, Carlisle, Builth Wells or Kelso. We’ve won every- where we’ve been.
