Miles Simpson in the middle
of Spreading for a spring crop
next to the Yorkshire Sculpture
Park was perhaps something he
will not forget!

Contractors was simply too
busy to stop work so I hopped
up to the cab for our chat.
He explained that he was
in the process of spreading
slurry and was some seven
hours into what would be a 13
hour day by the time he got
home.
I asked about the job in hand
and was intrigued to learn that
he was spreading no less than
25,000 gallons of slurry an hour
- all of which was coming down
a mile-long pipe from the slurry
tank. I was curious to know if he
was tempted to leave the pipe
there overnight - to which he
replied: “Well no you don’t want
to run the risk of vandalism or
frost- not at £12 a metre!” The
well-known Yorkshire saying,
“Weer’s there’s muck, there’s
brass comes to mind!”
I was amazed to discover that
Miles has been self-employed
since 1984 starting at 16
