“I went to buy two tups but
came back with four,” he said. “I
wanted to improve my breeding
gimmers and hopefully sell
good quality shearlings as a
result. When I looked around
I was astounded seeing pen
after pen of what looked to me
like brilliant Beltex tups, but I
know that if you’re not careful
you can buy what ends up
being an expensive haircut so
I felt their back legs because
that’s where you want the
hard meat and then put my list
together.
“Granddad always told me
a trick when at market is to
bid on the first animal but
not take it too far and let the
auctioneer know you have a
cut-off point so that’s how I
played it. The four I ended up
with have all served me well
so far. Tornado lived up to his
name immediately. I put him
in the field with 70 ewes and
normally change them after
a couple of days but I didn’t

get back the second day. By
the third day he’d tupped 64!
That’s when I then thought
surely that would mean most
would be singles but his ewes
scanned at 1.92! And he only
cost £1100.
“Some of my tups are seven
years old now. I haven’t gone
fully Beltex. I currently have
six Beltex tups and have my
own Beltex X and Charollais
tups. I started selling at York
in December 2014 and don’t
have the stock to go every
week. In the past year I was
there 12-14 times and usually
with anywhere between 20-40.
Lambing is usually around
the end of March/beginning
of April. I’m now looking at
keeping back another 200
gimmers with the aim of
producing quality shearlings in
the future.”
Paul also operates a contract
baling business during the
summer producing straw and
hay bales.
