decided to market it further as
he feels his Dales Way Cattle
Handler could help others in
a similar position. In essence
it is a cattle pen attached to a
fork-lift / telescopic handler that
is lifted up and over cattle, or
he corners them, so that he can
work with individual beasts.
“I need to be able to go
into the yard or the fields and
do things on my own and this
enables me to do just that. It
has been working very well for
me so I thought I ought to be
passing on my idea. I designed
my own prototype that you
see here working on the farm
and my good friend, Derek
Triffitt, who is well known for
his trailers, has made a couple
more to see how we go. I’m not
aiming to make a lot out of this,
I just think it’s something that
many other cattle men would
benefit from having on their
farms.
“Even with several people
around it is often difficult to
catch the beast you need to
look at but this device certainly
makes life easier and safer
too. Because I use a forklift or
handler there is an assumption
that this means food is being
brought and that brings the
cattle closer to start with,” he
explained.
Having seen Pip in action
with his Manitou and Dales Way
Cattle Handler I can personally
testify to its usefulness. He
successfully and with great
alacrity cornered a beast in one
of his sheds with the gates to
the pen open. Once cornered
and with the beast inside he
W
reversed slightly so that the
gates could then close.
“Once the beast is inside
the pen I then climb in and can
work with it individually without
worrying about whether it is
going to run off or in the case
of a calf, whether its mother is
going to be able to get to
