the thing that really got me
properly started was when
Jimmy lost his driving licence.
For a year I drove him about

and we would spend three
days a week further north than
Yorkshire buying cattle and
sheep.
“On the farm by then I was
rearing 15-20 calves every
month and had built up to
around 150 cattle on at any
one time. Barley beef was a
big thing at the time. But going
up with Jimmy opened my eyes
to what I could do. I looked at
the sheep and thought I could
sell them for more back home.
I ended up buying store cattle
and sheep, keeping the sheep
two to three weeks and selling
them. I began looking after
butchers’ requirements, fitting
up some of the York butchers
with 10 sheep and two beasts
