Recent prices of £160 for wheat and £140 for barley have been acceptable but he doesn’t want it going too much less. “We achieve good tonnages per acre on all of our crops as 70 per cent of our land is fertile Wolds land with most of it around 300ft above sea level. I’ve also recently changed to Swaythorpe on vining peas because they trade a little more on the open market and that provides greater outlets to purchase the crop.” Today Andrew runs and owns the farm business whilst Clive is involved in the factory site, some of the chicken-rearing sites and running his own small game dealing business. Andrew maintains his involvement as a partner in the factory. Andrew has a manager for the farming operation but is also very hands-on with his day-to-day work. One of the benefits of the farm’s poultry operation is the chicken manure that saves a considerable amount in farm fertiliser costs. Andrew met his wife, Sarah at Bishop Burton College. They have three daughters Emily, Lucy and Becky and a son, John. Sarah has a small pedigree herd of Hereford cattle that she started with about 10 years ago and sells heifers to local farmers with bulls going to dairy herds looking for a more traditional breed on their cows to produce a better calf. Andrew’s other interests include shooting - he runs a small shoot 5-6 days a year; keeping fit at a local gym in Driffield; and training for triathlons.
