There is also a lot of good virgin land available on the Yorkshire Wolds and Yorkshire seed is now much in demand,” he added. The massive sheds put up recently have increased Andrew’s storage capacity to around 11,000 tonnes of potatoes. He has also purchased a new seed grader from Holland and with additional boxes the outlay has been only just short of £1m. “It will pay itself off,” Andrew said. “I had to rent storage for 2,500 tonnes of potatoes elsewhere up until this year. I can now store 3,000 tonnes in the new building. At a rent of £35/tonne I had to pay £100,000 in storage charges plus the transportation costs of getting them into those other stores. I’ve saved all of that.” Andrew’s wheat varieties are Grafton, JB Diego and a new variety, Relay as a second wheat. It is all feed wheat and he aims to start drilling the first week in September.
