James says the herd now runs to 145 dairy cows and 120 followers with all milk going to Wensleydale Creamery since the demise of Dairy Farmers of Britain , and the latest change in their dairying came four years ago when they put up a new building to house the high yielders .
“ The high yielders are in all year round . It ’ s more for keeping them on a consistent diet . By keeping them inside we found the milk quality lifted and it has remained more stable due to the consistencies of diet , temperature , cow comfort and wellbeing .
“ Putting up the new building has also allowed us to grow numbers on , as we were full up at 120 . The high yielders are housed on full TMR and the low yielders are grazed through summer and buffer fed after each milking and have access to full TMR .
“ The new building also allowed us to bring home some cattle that were housed on a neighbour ’ s farm and we have now been able to organically grow the herd towards 150 cows , which is about our limit on being self-sufficient with grass and wholecrop , without having to buy a lot of feed in .
The lower yielding cows are on a strip grazing system and James says that they have also put in a lot of cow tracks .
“ They strip graze the paddocks , which means that twice a day they are on fresh grass . They spend a couple of days on each paddock and we have around 10 paddocks .
“ The cows are usually out from the start of April until the end of October . Our land is fairly well drained as we have spent a lot of time on drainage and putting in the tracks , which means the cows can be kept out for longer . The tracks are stone with astroturf 3 metres wide .
James says the most recent herd average is 11,051 litres , producing 4.53 fat , 3.47 protein and 101 somatic cell count .
