With any luck the weather will have been, and will be kinder to the world of agriculture than it has been in 2019. NOW into the new year and start of the long show season, The Farmers Mart will be carrying a report on this year’s LAMMA show which is on the 7th and 8th of January in our March issue which promises to be bigger and better than 2019. Don’t forget three great events that kick the Northern calendar off in fine style, traditionally great places to secure those good deals with your local dealer - Farmstar’s open day on the 16th January at their Marr depot. Ripon Farm Services open event on the 15th and 16th January at the Yorkshire Showground and on Wednesday 5th February the very successful YAMS show at York Auction Centre. There is a full preview in this issue showcasing a strong selection of this year’s exhibitors. ‘ celebrating 20 years in business ’ In this issue I had the pleasure of meeting up with the ladies who run the remarkably successful Siromer tractors. They are celebrating 20 years in business on page 54. Read all about Bentley Grange Feeds, the prosperous and ever-ex- panding animal feed and pick your own fruit business. Not the easiest of operations to run, Chris Moorhouse talks how he has made it a success. Chris Berry talks to Steven Kirby of Barstow Hall Farm at Ainderby, and his focus on bloodlines for his cham- pion flock of commercial Texel’s and Suffolk’s. Award winning Charollais sheep breeder Charles Marwood who talks about his hopes for the breed. He also met up with husband and wife team Robert and Elaine Butterfield at Linghaw Farm, High Bentham. These two have had their most successful year so far which is no mean achieve- ment as Robert very nearly died in an accident 8 years ago! ‘ Rural Business of the Year title in the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards ’ Read about the Basham’s of Mappleton who as well as develop- ing their B & B pig operation saw their Farmyard Friends Day Nursery win the Rural Business of the Year title in the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards. Lots of interesting material for reading in this issue. March issue will see reviews of all the three machin- ery events as well as the usual host of farm stories. Also look for the feature on Headingley Farmers Market that is helping regenerate a community in that area of Leeds. Ian Wilkinson Government announces support for flood-hit farmers FLOOD-HIT farmers in northern England will be able to apply for up to £25,000 in government grants to help them get back on their feet. The government has announced it will extend its Farming Recovery Fund to support farmers badly affected by the recent flooding across Yorkshire and the Midlands. Since the flooding began, approximately 14,400 prop- erties have been protected by flood defences, including nearly 5,000 properties in South Yorkshire alone. Over 300 Environment Agency staff are now on the ground in South Yorkshire sup- porting local communities affected.
