4 EDITOR’S INTRO
DEC/JAN 2020 • farmers-mart.co.uk
By the time you are all reading
this issue of The Farmers Mart
I hope you all had a great
festive season and managed
to snatch some well-earned
rest. With any luck the weather will
have been, and will be kinder to the world
of agriculture than it has been in 2019.
NOW into the new year and start of
the long show season, The Farmers
Mart will be carrying a report on this
year’s LAMMA show which is on the
7th and 8th of January in our March
issue which promises to be bigger
and better than 2019.
Don’t forget three great events that
kick the Northern calendar off in fine
style, traditionally great places to
secure those good deals with your
local dealer - Farmstar’s open day
on the 16th January at their Marr
depot. Ripon Farm Services open
event on the 15th and 16th January at
the Yorkshire Showground and on
Wednesday 5th February the very
successful YAMS show at York Auction
Centre. There is a full preview in this
issue showcasing a strong selection of
this year’s exhibitors.
‘ celebrating 20
years in business
’
In this issue I had the pleasure of
meeting up with the ladies who run
the remarkably successful Siromer
tractors. They are celebrating 20
years in business on page 54.
Read all about Bentley Grange
Feeds, the prosperous and ever-ex-
panding animal feed and pick your
own fruit business. Not the easiest of
operations to run, Chris Moorhouse
talks how he has made it a success.
Chris Berry talks to Steven Kirby of
Barstow Hall Farm at Ainderby, and
his focus on bloodlines for his cham-
pion flock of commercial Texel’s and
Suffolk’s. Award winning Charollais
sheep breeder Charles Marwood who
talks about his hopes for the breed.
He also met up with husband and wife
team Robert and Elaine Butterfield at
Linghaw Farm, High Bentham. These
two have had their most successful
year so far which is no mean achieve-
ment as Robert very nearly died in an
accident 8 years ago!
‘ Rural Business
of the Year title in
the Yorkshire Post
Rural Awards
’
Read about the Basham’s of
Mappleton who as well as develop-
ing their B & B pig operation saw their
Farmyard Friends Day Nursery win
the Rural Business of the Year title in
the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards.
Lots of interesting material for
reading in this issue. March issue will
see reviews of all the three machin-
ery events as well as the usual host of
farm stories. Also look for the feature
on Headingley Farmers Market that
is helping regenerate a community in
that area of Leeds.
