‘ We all know the result that counts is when the consumer goes into a supermarket or restaurant and buys the meat, takes it home, tastes it and then makes a decision on whether they want to come back for more. If it’ s not a good eating experience, they are loathe to return. I was in America last year and over there, farmers are incentivised to produce cattle with marbling – as a result their national eating satisfaction experience of beef is over 80 per cent. In the UK it is around 60 per cent.’

John’ s calving schedule is from mid- March to mid-May. He utilises AI as well as natural bulling and has 17 stock bulls including young first timers. Bulls are bought-in. His beef cattle are ready to go at 14 months.
Lleyn breeding ewes are John’ s preferred sheep breed. He runs a flock of 1200 ewes with 300 ewe lambs that were set to go to the tup as this issue was going to press.
