360 sow farrowing
pen wins Science
Award
»»The welfare focused
360 Sow Farrowing Pen,
invented by Midlands-based
pig producer Martin Barker,
has won the 2015 OFC/
RASE Practice with Science
Award. Sponsored by Map of
Agriculture, the award prize
money totals £10,000 which
Mr Barker, will use for further
development of the system.
He invented the farrowing
pen to address the high
mortality rates commonplace
with the practice of the
welfare-friendly “free
farrowing” approach. His
research, and resulting
design, surmised that the
size of pen was crucial to
minimising piglet losses. As
well as benefitting sow and
piglets, it is simple and safe
for farm staff to operate.
“The benefits are an
increased pig weaning
weight, resulting in a
reduced number of days
taken to reach slaughter,” he
explained. “Also, sows eat
10% more feed in the pen,
which means a good body
condition when they return
to the boar. This leads to an
improved service return rate
and an increased subsequent
litter number.
“The throughput of each
farrowing pen averages120
pigs per year with extra
production giving payback in
18 months.”
