he was involved all the way
during school. He has been a
prolific Rugby Union player for
local team, Stocksbridge, for
the past 15 years. He has also
been awarded Player of the
Year five times. Unfortunately,
he has had to take a break
from the game to concentrate
on the farm, as there is no
way he could risk picking
up any injuries that would
stop him working, and of
course, injuries are a natural
hazard of the game. Craig
and John make a great team
for creating champions; it will
15:25
usually take Craig around
6 months to train bulls and
heifers for showing, using
scarecrows, etc. I asked him
just how hard it is to train a
bull and he explained that he
once had a bull that simply
laid down and refused to be
trained! Another bull under
training was doing well until
he saw some kids - and
promptly legged it across
three fields!
Craig’s work with Simmentals
has not gone unnoticed and
not surprisingly, he is now
being asked to judge. He is
also chairman of the British
Simmental Society - North East
Club. Craig may not be playing
much rugby at present, but as
well as the 24/7 commitment
that farming demands, he is
managing to find the time and
energy to knock two cottages
together to create a new home
for him and his family. He
also helped John completely
rennovate the old farmhouse,
which now looks fantastic.
Craig’s twin sister, Lisa,
has also remained within the
farming fraternity - she is the
office manager at Argo feeds.
Meeting John, Val and Craig
over tea and biscuits, I sensed a
very close family with a passion
and pride for their particular
branch of farming - and the
determination to be the best
at what they do. We wish them
good health and continued
success
