Nick and Kate’s
friendly flock of sheep
for Christmas. The sows and
Bob were very friendly but
they do have a habit of burying
the electric fence in soil and
escaping! So there have been
a few instances of “pigs on the
wander”!
Great care is taken of the
herd to see they are fed well
and housed correctly. When
any piglets are either rejected
or not too strong, Kate will hand
rear them in the house and
even the family dog will sleep
next to them to protect and
keep them warm. But they have
to go back to the field when
strong enough- but they aren’t
pets and both the girls, Emily
and Alice understand this.
The hog roasts have gone
from strength to strength and
Emily and Alice
with the pigs
the herd continues to expand.
If you order for a Saturday it
will be in the field Tuesday,
prepared Wednesday, picked
up Friday and cooked Saturday.
They currently have two
roasters that will easily cook 60
kilo deadweight. Because of
the breed, the care of rearing
and feeding The Porkery’s hog
roasts are truly succulent.
Nick and Kate work extremely
well as a team with Kate doing
most of the office work, leaving
Nick to work the animals. Both
have a very careful and strategic
approach to the business
ensuring it grows properly and
they don’t over extend.
So from pies to sausages,
bacon, black pudding, lamb,
turkey and any cut of pork right
up to freezer packs, half beasts
and Hog Roasts, simply give
them a call and order what
you want – you will not be
disappointed.
As you would expect,
they have a firm future plan
to extend the lamb sales,
grow the pig operation and
introduce more sows.
And also to open a “Hog
Roast Cafe” selling fresh every
day roast pork sandwiches.
They also plan to acquire a
couple of Highland cattle and
start doing beef.
‘from strength
to strength’
Given Nick and Kate’s
planning, commitment and
teamwork, I don’t think it will
be long before they achieve
all this - and we certainly wish
them every success.
