When you consider that our trade is 75 per cent sheep here you see just how important their trade is to us. There is also a myth that the Halal trade is based around buying inferior produce. They are the main customers for mature sheep (mutton), cull ewes and hill breeds but they are also significant buyers at the quality end of the trade. The fortnight before the Muslim Festival of Eid our trade in sheep was similar to turkeys for Christmas!” Bentham’s geographic position means that they have traditionally sold livestock from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria but Stephen has noticed an increasing trend of 52 Dec/Jan 2015 FarmersMart sheep farmers attending from Derbyshire. “That is because we get a decent number of buyers around the ring which means there is competition. That is what the livestock market system is all about. Around the ring for our regular weekly fatstock sales you will see upwards of 15 buyers, with a number of those buying for several other purchasers,” he explained. Cattle also have their place at Bentham with store cattle sales either once or twice a month according to the seasons – dairy sales are still held but have struggled owing to a lot of smaller dairy farmers leaving the sector. Store lamb sales were started just five years ago and Stephen is pleased with their progress. “We are happy with what we have achieved in recent times but we don’t believe in resting on any laurels.
