Tim no longer carries young
stock on the farm. He buys
in all his replacements in
batches.
“When we moved up from
100 cows to 200, I had to
change our policy and that
meant eliminating having
young stock as we didn’t
have the space. I buy in-calf
heifers of freshly-calved heifers
from other farmers and local
breeders who will sell to us
in batches. Occasionally I’ll
import a large batch just to
keep the numbers up.
“Our milk goes to Payne’s
Dairies after having lost out
when Dairy Farmers of Britain
went bust. I am NFU Deputy
Chairman for the North East
Dairy Board and obviously very
concerned about the way the
price paid to farmers is going
once again at the moment. We
desperately need to bring this
crisis to the attention of the
general public.”
Tim has found that he gets
better results by keeping
most of his herd inside and
so his land is down to a mix of
grass, wheat, barley or maize.
While most of what is grown
is intended for feed he sold
80 acres of wheat from the
previous year’s harvest for
biscuit – this latest harvest
he sold to a local farmer who
bought it for his cattle. He has
