We put a list together separately and then see which ones are on both our lists and go with them. It’s a way of working together. There were two full brothers we had chosen and we settled on Chapelton Dark Mahmoud, by a bull called Champion Hill Edition.’ ‘He did fantastically well for us. Out of his first crop of calves I took three yearling bulls to the Great Yorkshire Show in 2008 and in the yearling bull class they finished 1st 2nd and 4th. They won in the progeny pairs class and the group of 3. One of them was also reserve champion overall in the breed.’ David and Penny now have a herd of 55 cows. They have kept a Mahmoud son and have recently bought Abberton Dazzle from Catriona and Alec Sutherland who has great potential. But they’re not stopping there. ‘I was invited over to Ireland a couple of months ago to judge at the All Ireland Championship and this bull came into the ring – Goulding Janey Mac – in the young handlers class. I 32 Dec/Jan 2014 FarmersMart placed him junior champion, reserve overall and bought him immediately. He went on to win Irelan’s other main Aberdeen Angus competition too as overall champion and he’s just arrived at Tree Bridge. He’s some animal and also shows great potential.’ David is fully aware that in his role as President he has an onerous responsibility to promote the breed even more than he is doing already. ‘We want to continue increasing the market share of Angus beef. We have excellent relationships with the major supermarkets and the breed is synonymous with quality. We are all focussed on increasing our share even further and that’s where we as a society intend to assist in any way we can. We already have a very strong brand name and we are keen to build on it.
