BRIAN & ROGER PEACOCK THIRSK • NORTHALLERTON • MALTON • RUSWARP A Yorkshire family business for Yorkshire farmers! wife, Pat and their son, Roger are also heavily involved on the 200-acre home farm that extends to 500-600 acres with short-term tenancies. “As well as our own straw, we buy a lot of straw in the swath to bale up and sell to customers in North Yorkshire, Cumbria and the South West of Scotland, particularly around Dumfries where most of our volume goes,” Brian explained. “We’ve been doing that for nearly 30 years and we run two trucks constantly throughout the season. “The most important factor when selling straw is that it is dry, so it is vital that when the farmer opens the bale it provides a nice, clean usable product. We source quite a bit of the straw we need from the Yorkshire Wolds and Holderness. That means that we’re often collecting straw from villages such as Burton Pidsea and Patrington and travelling over 200 miles to the Dumfries area.” Brian and Roger were both aware of how hard last winter hit the livestock farmers they serve and they didn’t take advantage of a situation where farmers were desperate for straw due to Stockists of the largest range of livestock equipment in this area!
