“ We don ’ t get the milk yield per head of intensive goat farms but the quality is there in the milk and that is also there in the cheese . Our average is between 1.8 to 2 litres per goat per day for 300 days . We work them like dairy cows . I think a goat needs to rest after 300 days . The dairy herd will typically give 6 to 8 years of production so long as they ’ ve got teeth and are looking fit and healthy , and they normally average 150 per cent prolificacy .

“ We are only milking about 60 goats at the moment and we are soon finished . Milking takes up an hour at each end of the day which allows us time for doing other jobs . I ’ m not one of those who wants to be in a parlour for hours on end .
Frank says that the forage based diet the Piper Hole goats are on is one of the main differences between Piper Hole milk and cheese against more intensive goat herds .
