“ Getting the lambs weaned early gives the ewes a rest which I see as critical . We tup from 5 December which gives them plenty of time to get back into condition and since we ’ ve been doing it that way our scanning rates have gone up to 200 per cent . We were at 190-195 previously which doesn ’ t seem a lot more , but it all helps .

Mark ’ s cattle start calving at the same time as lambing starts , and he aims for calving to be completed in a 14-week window .

“ The majority of my sucklers are now Angus X or Hereford X ; the same as the bulls . It ’ s a breeding pyramid where we ’ ve got a few Limmie X and British Blue X cows at the top that we put to the Hereford X or Angus X bull or AI .

“ We use a bit of AI for replacements , all out of top quality bulls . I have a decent

British Blue X cow , who has a decent bag and calves on her own . I ’ ll put a Hereford or something like that on her , get a Hereford X heifer out of her or an Angus out of her . That ’ s the principle

“ Stock for killing out goes at between 20-24 months with everything going to Dunbia . I like to know what I ’ m producing and that everything is recorded so I always look for the killing out percentages .

Lynne , Mark ’ s wife , is originally from East Yorkshire . The couple have three daughters – Becky , who Mark says is a real asset to the farm and helps with all sheep and cattle work ; Sally who works with Harrogate Borough Council ; and Ellie who is a partner in the family farm and a land agent with George F White and as such offers her father professional advice .
