Committed to improvement through recording – and helping others with profitability

Chris Berry talks project funding and Ram Compare with Mark Exelby of The Hutts Farm
SHEEP and beef farmer Mark Exelby of The Hutts Farm in Grewelthorpe is committed to improving results of his 350 breeding ewes and his 60 suckler cows , and now he ’ s also trying to help fellow farmers in the Nidderdale AONB .
Mark has taken on the role of chair of the board of FIPL ( Farming in Protected Landscapes ) that has a pot of money available for farmers to apply for in relation to projects that will hopefully help with sustainability of their farming operations .
Mark says his main priority is to enable farmers to produce a profit .
“ I ’ m looking for innovation and to provide others with an opportunity to make farming more sustainable in Nidderdale both environmentally and in profitability .
“ This is not about just giving people money to plant hedges and put up walls , to my mind if farmers want to do that kind of thing there is already the Countryside Stewardship scheme .
“ There ’ s no point taking that from this pot of money we ’ ve been given to distribute . Let ’ s put it into special projects helping farmers with things that cannot be covered through stewardship schemes either because they haven ’ t become part of the establishment yet or simply because they will add to making the farm work . The ideas could be anything .
