huge amount of work and planning beforehand . One of the main barns was emptied and the floor levelled with road planings supplied by Todds of Darlington , and levelled by JM Bell groundworks who were very generous , being only too pleased to donate their services for such a good cause . Extra electrical points were installed to ensure there was enough lighting and power supply for all the sound and catering with the help of Martin Keane . A Bale trailer was transformed into a sound stage where both the charity auction and grand raffle could take place , the auction very ably MC ’ d by Giles Drew of Northallerton Auctions and as I said earlier Lord Crathorne very kindly agreed to draw the raffle . Music on the night was supplied by the very popular local band “ The Sugar Bees ”, who had a superb mix of rock music and ballads from across the decades thesugar-bs @ hotmail . com .
One thing is for sure , if you are staging an event for farmers to come and enjoy , you need food , drink and plenty of it . Saturday the 23rd did not disappoint , bar facilities supplied by Kevin Porter Outside
Bars kept ale , wine and spirits flowing nearly as fast as the guests could drink it . Food was supplied in ample delicious amounts by Hutchinson Hobbs from just down the road at Holdenfields Farm and farm shop . Three different types of hot meats , veg , salads and delicious desserts for afters . Hutchinsons know how to cook the very best for those who appreciate it and if you haven ’ t already tasted the best in food straight from the farm , once you do you will rarely want to visit the supermarket again .
Ticket sales were brisk and a few days prior there were more than 300 tickets sold which was excellent , however due to a last-minute burst Ian had to ring Hutchinsons on the Friday to say sales were up to 400 ! “ No problem ” came the reply !
The venue filled up pretty quickly from 7.30pm and generated a great buzz . Farmers need a special reason to take a break from the farm and enjoy themselves , well Crossfield ’ s Charity Evening was certainly that .
Ian ’ s wife Lynn was hard at work along with a couple of friends selling raffle tickets . Prizes included a generous hamper from Tony Devereaux , voucher from Kitsons of Crathorne , and afternoon tea from Crathorne Hall . Ian secured some great auction prizes , from a chainsaw from Carrs Billington to Air Ambulance Bears . The evening was a great success , with the last revellers leaving somewhat unsteadily around 1pm . Ian and Lynn would like to sincerely thank Peter & Jane Brown , Pam Spooner , Eddy Smith , Jordan Pickard , and Les Clemmitt for all their help getting the farm ready and to all who supported and donated to the charity . The 2015 total was well surpassed , this year ’ s event raised a spectacular £ 6004.70 for the North Yorkshire Air Ambulance – well done to all !
Ian and Lynn were delighted to hand over the cheque in person on the 4th of August .
So , same again for 2023 ? I asked Ian . “ It ’ s already booked for 1st July 2023 ” was the reply put the date in your dairy !
