A big challenge to the oil seed rape is the flea beetle , which takes a lot of spraying to keep down . A further major threat to the crop is the wood pigeon , which attack the plant leaves either decimating the plant or greatly reducing the oil content . Rape can be a very good cash crop ; however , the risk of low yield and loss is considerable . Ryegrass is another big problem , particularly when spray hardly touches it ; the plan is to plough up much more next year and swap crops over . Ian took over a field from a farmer completely overrun with blackgrass , he re-planted with beans and the blackgrass disappeared (!) and
would you know it , the farmer wanted it back . Storms can ruin a crop , hail can be insured against but that ’ s all , so the weather can cause catastrophic loss at the drop of a hat .
The contracting side continues to grow with still plenty of room for extra enquiries . This forms a key part of the farm ’ s diversification and success . The combining continues to be a major part of the contracting side , combining some 1520acres and the new Claas Lexion- 750-tt has been a considerable asset . They drill around 1500 acres , spray some 6 to 7000 acres and produce some 35 to 40,000 round and square bales . Due to the weather in 2020 / 2021 straw was like gold . 2022 looks set to be the same again , depending on the weather .
Winter can be challenging for farmers , however Ian has turned winter into a good earner . He has a gritting contract for some 70 sites in the northeast - it does mean he can be out all hours with his small fleet of gritters supplied by Vale engineering , but aren ’ t most farmers anyway !?
Ian believes in using the best of machinery for both his own land and the contracting side and has an impressive line-up of manufacturers , including Massey Ferguson tractors , Claas , Pottinger , McHale , Vaderstadt , Krone , Housham , Sumo and Dowdsell .
