Planet this year all for feed . We aim for 2.5 tonnes per acre . My idea is to also grow oats and rotate the 50 acres around the farm . We are in stewardship too . What that means is that half of the 50 acres stays on as winter stubble .’
‘ What I hadn ’ t realised before we came here was how wet this farm is . It ’ s not a problem but it means you have to know how to manage it and work it . Winter sown crops would be fantastic but winter barley doesn ’ t like its feet went so that ’ s why we are on with spring barley .’
‘ I ’ m also reseeding the grass leys to improve the conditions for the sheep and we have wildflower meadows across two and a half acres .’
‘ Mum had told Mrs White that it would take five years to turn the farm around . We ’ re doing well , despite not being able to get anything into the ground in 2019 and then nothing out in 2020 . I still wouldn ’ t change it for anything .’
John likes nothing better than watching his Blonde cows , riding his Honda CR250 off-road around the farm , along with his sons on their pit bikes , and attending rock concerts with Lezah ‘ Lou ’. They love naming their animals after famous rock names or songs .
‘ We have a 5 year old homebred Blonde bull called Lars , after Lars Ulrich , the drummer out of Metallica ; one of our cows , My Michelle is so named after a song by Guns ‘ n ’ Roses ; Motorhead and Lemmy were both bulls ; we have a calf called Six : AM after the LA hard rock band ; and Slash from Guns ‘ n ’ Roses is another calf . You could say that rock music is an influence .’
Another big influence is John ’ s mum Glennis . When John ’ s father David tragically died in a combine harvester accident when John was just 8 years old it was Glennis with the help of other family members and friends who made sure the farm at Ruswarp went on and raised her children at the same time .
‘ Mum says it ’ s all just about ‘ getting on ’ and that ’ s what she did for me , Jane and Carol . She has been brilliant throughout everything we have done . Although I was only young when dad died I still have good , strong memories of him .’
‘ We ’ re loving it here ,’ says John . ‘ Lou ’ s father farms nearby at Mill Bank , Boggle Hole and one of the guys I worked with for a number of years Andrew Williamson is also not far away at Spring Farm , Robin Hood ’ s Bay .’
