Clearly a business such as this does not start overnight and only employing 12 people , a part time secretary and a gamekeeper for the shoot , it needs some skilful management to keep all the various plates spinning .
Eager to learn more about it all , I recently headed up to Longwitton on a sunny warm Tuesday to meet with John , who is the hard-working , quietly assured driver of this thriving farming operation , along with his recently appointed farm manager , David Gilchrist .
David has recently joined the business . John ’ s previous manager left a year ago to return to her family farm . John had been looking for a new manager as spreading himself too thinly means he can ’ t commit the right amount of time to everything as well as spending time with his two children who live with his wife in Newcastle ( That ’ s another story )
David joined the business a year ago and would you believe the interview took place on ZOOM and Facetime ! David brings with him a wealth of experience , originally from Berwick , he studied at SRUC , achieving a first-class honours degree in agriculture . He then worked in various locations in the south which enabled him to become a very accomplished mixed farmer . David ’ s long-term aim was always to return to the north . He had heard on the agricultural grapevine John was looking for someone and he was good man to work with . This was a perfect opportunity particularly as it was proving difficult to move in a pandemic and David ’ s wife was pregnant as well . Once in situ , David ’ s mixed farm expertise meant he quickly got to grips with the business . David has already helped John and the business by looking for and implementing increased efficiencies without having to compromise Yields
