‘ We have around 2 to 2.5 per cent of the UK egg market . Happy Eggs are No 1 and Noble have a significant share . Margins are always tight , but it helps if you mill your own feed . That way you can make substantial savings . We are totally out of the wheat market in terms of having to buy it because of what we grow . We only have soya that we have to buy in .’
Philip came back home in 2012 after having graduated at Harper Adams with a BSc in agricultural crop management and spent 18 months with agronomist Chris Wrigley before taking over the arable farming operation at Manor House in 2013 .
‘ We had been a tenanted farm until 2008 when we bought the 210 acres ,’ says Philip . ‘ We then bought another 20 acres from a neighbour and we still rent the other 100 acres at Skipsea . We now also rent various parcels of land all around Holderness and the East Riding in Brandesburton , Hornsea , Driffield and North Frodingham which takes us to around 800 acres . We had about 400 acres of winter wheat this year with varieties Kerrin , Graham and Shabras . We grow Group 4 hardy wheats because they mill best . Our land type is mainly grades 2 and 3 medium to heavy clay , not pretty stuff . We yield map off the combine and the previous three years we have averaged 4.5 tonnes per acre .’
