delighted with his first crop born in spring this year .
‘ I ’ d been thinking about Stabilisers for a while . Our first calving of those running with the Stabiliser bull have been pretty impressive . The calving itself was fantastic as I hardly needed to be involved at all and they are cracking at putting on the right weight . Our calving period is between February and May .’
This year ’ s cereal cropping saw Robert lose some of the winter wheat he had originally drilled through bad weather . He ended up with 50 acres instead of the 85 acres he ’ d intended . His two varieties this year were Gator and Firefly . He also grew 25 acres of spring wheat , 17 acres of winter beans and 15 acres of spring barley .
‘ Our land is mainly yellow clay . We can achieve up to three and three-quarter to four tonnes per acre when we can establish the wheat correctly . This year ’ s harvest didn ’ t turn out too bad in the end , it could have been a hell of a lot worse and the wheat surprised me a little , but just like our holiday business with Covid-19 it has been challenging because of the weather conditions in autumn and winter last year and into this year .’
‘ Grass harvest plays another vital part in our farming operation either through offering grazing for our cattle , silaging or making hay . We are very low input and aim to take one big cut in July and another in September .’
It has been a difficult year for most farmers who combine running a farm with also managing and running a holiday accommodation enterprise , but Robert and Hannah are still smiling and they are determined to carry on building their business – adding new facilities for their guests and keeping their eyes on the best cattle breeding and working the land as effectively as possible .
