The cows produce some 45,000 plus litres of milk a year now. They average eight lactations each and many 10. The MRI’ s make great mothers with most of the heifers calving and rarely needing any attention or help. This also means the herd is pretty self sufficient
What is great to see that all Milk production is sold to 35 milkmen in the area from Barnsley, Wakefield and Huddersfield. Barkhouse is one of the few dairies both to produce and process, the processing part having been introduced 40 years ago. In order to encourage milkmen to come and buy their milk from them they installed a viewing gallery 23 years ago so they could come and see the efficiency and cleanliness first hand as dairy farms sometimes had a name for being somewhat smelly and dirty places. Some of the milk
production goes to making butter and a range of very tasty ice cream along with a healthy amount of milk sold from the doorstep and via the tea rooms( more of that shortly).
Development and future proofing has always been key to the Dearnley business. 21 years ago the decision was made to open a small tea room to create extra income and encourage more doorstep sales. Initially just one small room built by Gordon it has been extended a few times and now seats up to 90! Everything is baked and cooked fresh on the premises and as well as the steady stream of people coming for breakfast, lunch coffee and afternoon tea seven days a week. Other significant developments have been the sinking of their own borehole which now produces 90 % of their water and a further site has been identified to add to this a
