The Burdass’ own farmland
now runs to around 1250 acres
of arable land with a further 50
acres of permanent pasture and
grassland. Tim’s grandfather
came here in the early 1900s.
Dotterill Park Farm runs to
around 600 acres and having
been tenanted previously was
bought in 1980. Pear Tree Farm
at Thwing was purchased in
1972 and is one of two farms in
Thwing that make up the rest
of the acreage. The farming
partnership between Tim’s
father and his uncle was set up
in 1957 after Tim’s grandfather
passed away.
This year’s harvest was
under way as we were going
to press with this edition of
Farmers Mart. Tim says he
would be pleasantly surprised
- and probably a little amazed
- if yields were as high as the
2015 harvest.
“We have good strong
Wolds land, typically medium
loam and chalk. Last year saw
record yields and we had one
or two fields recording near to
six tonnes an acre. This year
we’re harvesting 540 acres
of winter wheat with 50 per
cent destined for milling and
the rest going for feed. We’ve
been growing the varieties
Gallant, Trinity and Crusoe. It’s
our first time with Trinity and
it has been looking good and
standing well. We’re fortunate
to have good grain store
capacity of 3000 tonnes in one
store and the ability to store
6000-7000 tonnes across our
other farms.
“We’ve also been harvesting
150 acres of winter barley and
150 acres of spring barley. The
winter barley is all Venture for
malting. It’s on contract. We grew
Glacier last year, which did very
well for us, but we’re growing
what the market demands and
